Most students realize that their athletic endeavors end once college starts. But there is always that one saving grace for those unwilling to leave their athletic dreams in the past – intramurals.
For many students, intramurals provide the break in the week where classes, money and problems don't matter. Despite the cramped courts at the Rec Center or the trek down to Valley Fields, students can unleash their competitive side while socializing with teammates.
Clearly, intramurals are kind of a big deal. So when minor glitches like scheduling conflicts or a lack of information cause games to be cancelled or forgotten by teams, major frustration follows.
After trudging down to Valley Fields on a cold night, the last thing you want to hear is that the other team is MIA.
With hundreds of teams in intramural leagues, the chances of every team member checking the posted schedules at the Rec Center are slim. Therefore, it is the responsibility of each team manager to inform the team of its game times, but too often this information is misunderstood or completely forgotten.
If the intramural office could add schedules, names of team managers and team contact information to its Web site, the percentage of missed games and communication setbacks would drop.
In fact, the intramural office once offered this service to students, according to Anne Pufahl, assistant director at the Rec Center. Unfortunately, the student who managed the Web site graduated about four years ago. The position was never filled because of the amount of work involved.
Team and scheduling information was continually updated and allowed all members of the teams to conveniently check for changes.
While relying on the team managers to relay information to teammates is the obvious alternative, it is simply too unreliable. And if there's one thing students today have mastered, it's using the Internet to find information.
By reviving this method of communication, intramurals can be a guaranteed perfect escape from college worries.
