Calm under pressure
You just knew it was going to happen, didn't you?
At some point this season, Dominic James was going to be called upon to take free throws that would decide a close game against a marquee opponent.
Many Marquette fans may have dreaded the sight of their star point guard preparing to take two freebies that would give the team an overtime victory on the home court of the conference's best team. Because despite James' usual on-court confidence, his ability to make 15-footers with no one guarding him had been a weakness throughout his Marquette career.
Obviously, James silenced all doubters Sunday, as the men's basketball team defeated then-No. 6 Pittsburgh 77-74 in overtime.
Marquette's performance impressed CBS basketball analyst Billy Packer so much that he swore the Golden Eagles would beat any mid-major team they faced in the NCAAs.
Well, maybe not, but he was probably thinking it, right?
Ellis shines again
For the second straight game, the women's basketball team opened up a double-digit halftime lead only to let its opponent back into the game for a nervous finish. And for the second straight game, sophomore Krystal Ellis came to the Golden Eagles' rescue.
Ellis had a game-high 24 points and scored the go-ahead layup with 11 seconds left as Marquette won at Providence 79-77. Ellis was named on Monday to the Big East honor roll for the fifth time this season.
Marquette will need her to continue her dazzling form tonight against Notre Dame in a clash between the second- and third-place teams in the conference.
Tennis teams drop opening matches
The men's and women's tennis teams opened their seasons Saturday on a losing note. The men fell 7-0 at Michigan, and the women lost 4-3 at home to Illinois. The men's team failed to win a set in singles play, and the only bright spot was a win at No. 2 doubles by Trent Hagan and Pete Van Lieshout.
Maria Calbeto, Erin Watkins and Robin Metzler won singles matches for the women's team, but the No. 1 doubles tandem of Lauren Little and Shannon Brown lost 9-8 (4) in a tiebreaker, which gave the Illini the doubles point and the match.
