Barron, a Chicago native, was formerly the newspaper's executive managing editor. After graduating from Marquette he worked at Craig's Chicago Business as an editor, then at the Detroit Monthly as its editor.

John Barron, a 1980 graduate of the School of Journalism, was promoted Friday to editor in chief of the Chicago Sun-Times.
