Shirley George wants penalties increased for those who aid someone in a crime. And she has worked, for the last five years, with lawmakers and others to draft a bill.
Anyone convicted under present law for helping a felon may face imprisonment for up to three-and-a-half years and a fine of up to $10,000. However, the court may place the person on probation in lieu of prison or jail.
The bill, introduced by Sen. Luther Olsen (R-Berlin) and Sen. Carol Roessler (R-Oshkosh), would boost the penalties to up to six years' imprisonment and would not allow the court to place a person on probation in lieu of imprisonment.
