Beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing into Friday before Family Weekend, the message "Free Jello Shots at MURPHS Fri 9-10 pm" appeared all over campus sidewalks.
There is no recognized student organization called MURPHS and the message was not approved by the Office of Student Development, according to Assistant Dean of Student Development Jon Dooley.
Director of University Communication Brigid O'Brien Miller confirmed Friday afternoon that Murphy's Irish Pub, 1613 W. Wells St., was responsible for the chalking. She said the university contacted the business to inform it that chalking on campus is not allowed by outside groups or businesses.
"Murphy's indicated that they understand this policy and that they will not do so again," she said.
Jessica Michael, a junior in the College of Arts & Sciences, said she saw two men chalking on the Wisconsin Avenue crosswalk by the John P. Raynor, S.J. Library around 5 p.m. Thursday.
The first man stooped down and wrote "Jello," then got up, looked around and kept crossing the street, she said. The second man came behind him and finished writing the message.
She said she watched them chalk another time on the other side of Wisconsin Avenue near the Jesuit Residence.
Murphy's Irish Pub did not return calls for comment on this account.
O'Brien Miller said by 3 p.m. Friday, most of the chalking was faded or had been removed.
Director of Facilities Services Ronald Ripley said two to four groundskeepers worked most of the day to remove the chalking.
"We heard things from a number of people about the messages," he said.
Associate Director of Public Safety Capt. Russ Shaw said he didn't recall any other incidences of Murphy's breaking university policies.
