Supervisors backed a new idea for a replacement parking structure without a firm idea of the price after meeting for hours behind closed doors and later in public as they struggled to meet a Friday deadline imposed by state officials paying for demolition.
MILWAUKEE (JOURNAL SENTINEL)A 15-member majority of the Milwaukee County Board on Tuesday endorsed demolition of the Courthouse Annex, but they added a last-minute twist that drew immediate opposition from County Executive Scott Walker and again clouded the fate of the structure hanging over I-43.
Supervisors backed a new idea for a replacement parking structure without a firm idea of the price after meeting for hours behind closed doors and later in public as they struggled to meet a Friday deadline imposed by state officials paying for demolition.
The 227-stall, two-story facility would be on the annex site but would not extend over the freeway. It would include secure underground parking for judges and possibly supervisors and above-ground spots for additional county employees. The preliminary cost estimates are $3 million to $4.5 million, but some supervisors questioned whether that guess is low.
