Even though Wisconsin-Stout had three times as many subs as the Golden Eagles, it was not the Marquette women's basketball team that was worn out by the end of the game.

Marquette finished its exhibition season 2-0 with an 80-58 win over Wisconsin-Stout on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center. Junior forward Christina Quaye led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and three other players scored in double-digits.

In 27 minutes, Quaye shot 4-for-13 from the floor and hit 7-of-9 free throws. She grabbed seven offensive rebounds and added five steals.

Sophomore Svetlana Kovalenko had 12 points of her own and six rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Juniors Danielle Kamm and Jasmine McCullough had 10 points apiece.

In the game, much of the scoring was done in the post, but head coach Terri Mitchell is relying on all her athletes to contribute in their own way this season.

"There's 10 of us on the team," Mitchell said. "They all need to step up, and they're all going to play. They each bring something different to the table."

Stout started the game strong, leading by five points early in the first half. Marquette responded by going on an 11-2 run and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.

Freshman Krystal Ellis had a breakout game, tallying nine points, four rebounds, two assists and five steals in 16 minutes.

"Krystal is adjusting to the college game," Mitchell said. "She's long and quick and a tremendous athlete. She's still understanding our zone, but she's coachable everyday."

While the point guard and forward positions are secured, the rest of the line-up is still not set in stone. Most of the game consisted of Mitchell trying different combinations in order to get her team ready for its regular season opener at Evansville on Friday.

"I keep telling the girls that stats don't count now," Mitchell said. "We're trying to build leadership."

The goal of the exhibition season is quite simple — to get better.

And the team did. While the Golden Eagles still need to fine-tune certain aspects of their games, come Friday, they'll be ready to go.

"The reality is," Mitchell said, "our season's here."
