Cubillan plays for Dan Hurley at St. Benedict's Preparatory School and was a teammate of current Marquette freshman Dwight Burke last season. While playing alongside Burke he averaged 10 points and 4.5 assists per game last season.
Hailing from Mara Caibo, Venezuela, Cubillan led St. Benedict's to the AND 1 High School Basketball Championship/Metro East qualifier title.
After missing out on both 6-foot-9 Bryce Webster (he signed with Minnesota) and 7-foot Chas McFarland (Wake Forest), Marquette has one scholarship remaining. It will likely be used on a prep school or JUCO big man in the spring.
Women's basketball
Janelle Harris, Jocelyn Mellen and Lauren Thomas-Johnson committed to play basketball for Terri Mitchell beginning in the fall of 2006.
Harris, who was teammates with current Marquette freshman Marissa Thrower at Renaissance High School in Detroit, averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game last season.
Hailing from Sterling, Ill., Mellen is a 6-foot-3 post player who was named Second Team All-State as a junior.
Thomas-Johnson started for the English under-18 national team this past summer and led Notre Dame Academy in Middlebury, Va., to a 26-2 record. The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 15 points, six rebounds and five assists last season.
The team also gains the services of Kelly Lam next season. The 6-foot-3 center is sitting out this season after transferring from Oklahoma.
Volleyball
Chaska, Minn., native Leslie Bielski signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles next year.
The 6-foot-0 outside hitter is a four-year letter winner who was named to the All-Metro first team by the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune. She recorded 292 kills, 41 blocks and a 35.2 percent hitting average during her senior season.
Tennis
Marquette men's tennis coach Steve Rodecap announced recently that two recruits have signed National Letters of Intent Nicholas Boulieris of Lake Forest, Ill., and Mark Rutherford of Calgary, Alberta.
Boulieris currently attends Libertyville High School and was named All-State Athlete in tennis by the Illinois High School Association.
Rutherford has already had success on the court, winning doubles in the Canadian ITF Grade 4 event and teaming up with his brother Scott, who formerly played tennis for the Wisconsin Badgers, to win the doubles title at the ITA Summer Circuit.,”Men's basketball”
