LateNight Marquette received about $75,000 from the university's operating budget to enhance late night programming, Marquette Student Government adviser Jon Dooley said Thursday.

The decision to increase late-night programming came as a result of the Noel-Levitz campus-wide survey, completed several years ago. It showed students were somewhat dissatisfied with weekend activities.

"This initiative was to try to have lots of stuff late at night and over the weekend," said Dooley, who is also assistant dean of Student Development.

Improving late night activities increases the quality of student life in general, according to the students and staff involved.

"It's a great initiative for students to get involved on campus," said LateNight Marquette Communications Project Team Chair James Hart, coordinator of publications and communication in the Office of Student Development.

According to the survey, most students suggested movies and live music as possible LateNight Marquette programs, which usually happen after 9 p.m.

Dooley said LateNight Marquette was proposed in August 2003 and serves as an independent late-night programming organization with its own budget, although it occasionally may team up with other groups on campus.

Dooley said the Noel-Levitz survey was part of the reason for LateNight Marquette's formation.

This year's operating budget allotted about $75,000 for the group, Dooley said. Most of the money will be used to create additional late-night programs, which other groups, such as the Residence Hall Association and MUSG, may not be able to support financially on their own.

LateNight Marquette offers student organizations such as MUSG some financial help because their budgets may be limited, said Jess Ripp, MUSG programming vice president and member of LateNight Marquette's steering committee.

A minimal part went to the LateNight Marquette's communication project team to pay for advertising and Web site upkeep.

According to Dooley, LateNight Marquette asked for more than $75,000 from the university. It had to cut down on at least one committee for now, due to lack of funding.

Although LateNight Marquette received less money than it asked for, Dooley said the organization is grateful for any amount of money allocated by the university.

LateNight Marquette is a partnership of groups on campus involved in student programming, according to Dooley. Some groups include MUSG, Office of Student Development, Office of Residence Life, Residence Hall Association and the Alumni Memorial Union.
