The Golden Eagles added another win to their record on Friday when they defeated the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 6-1.
The tennis team's record is 2-0, with a pair of home wins, but the players know better than to take it for granted.
"Coach always stresses to never be satisfied," senior Creighton Macy said. "We know that we have better teams ahead of us and it is important to keep working hard."
The men took the lead early by coming out of doubles play with the point. The duo of seniors Raj Gill and Creighton Macy defeated Chuck LeVaque and Colin Priestener in No. 2 doubles, 8-6. Sophomores Ian Kawas and Ricky Servoss were victorious against Brandon Lenfert and Ryan Blankenbaker.
"We carried the momentum from doubles right into singles play," Gill said.
The Golden Eagles entered singles play ahead, 1-0, and went on to defeat EIU in every match except No. 1 singles.
"One of our team's strengths is that we can mentally get on the court and get the job done," Gill said.
Another one of the team's strengths, according to Macy, is its ability and desire to win and compete as a team.
Kawas, who also contributed to the taking of the doubles point, was the first player to beat his opponent and win a singles point. He defeated Ryan Blankenbaker, 6-2, 6-1 in No. 6 singles.
The No. 1 and No. 2 singles players switched from last Friday, placing Eigis Vedrickas at No. 1 singles. Vedrickas fell to C.J. Weber, 6-3, 6-0.
After losing his first singles match last week, Hugo Leenders bounced back and defeated Brandon Blankenbaker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
No. 3 singles player Raj Gill triumphed over his EIU opponent, Chuck LaVaque, in a tie breaker, 5-7, 6-4, 10-2.
Macy came out on top when he beat Colin Priestner, 6-1, 6-4 at four singles. At No. 5, Servoss defeated, Brandon Lenfert, 6-3, 7-6.
"Eastern beat us last year in a close match," Macy said. "We wanted to come out on top this time."
The Golden Eagles host their next match at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 against Southern Illinois.
