The men's club volleyball team served up a surprise for Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Thursday. The No. 6 ranked Golden Eagles pulled out a gritty 3-2 win over the Titans.
There was not a seat to be found as fans from both Oshkosh and Marquette packed the court for the exciting match.
Although some fans didn't think Marquette was on their best game, the men overcame their faults and won the game.
"I don't think they were playing as a team in the last two matches," freshman Jazmin Brantley said. "They played well overall though. I'm not surprised that they are ranked number six in the country."
Marquette, which is on an eight-match win streak, leads the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference with nine wins and one loss. Since the team recently won the Midwest 10 Championship, defeating Northern Illinois, Lakeland College, and UW-Oshkosh it is ranked sixth in the country.
In the first two games, Marquette was hot with 25-18, 25-16 wins, due in part from the blocking of junior Chuck Warner.
"We all were pretty consistent throughout the game but sophomores Tom Lizska and Ryan Biros stood out," Warner said.
It may have seemed like an easy battle but the Titans were not giving up.They fought their way back and won two matches, 25-21 and 25-17.
The wins from UW-Oshkosh came after the Golden Eagles missed some key plays that let Oshkosh go ahead for the early lead.
"In the two games we lost, we lost our competitive fight," Warner said.
In the final game, Biros stepped up and played killer defense as he stepped up and blocked several balls.
"It was a good match to be at," freshman Candace Edmond said. "The last game was the most exciting because there was so much depending on that game. I think Marquette had a lot at stake but they handled it well with the win."
Both teams will play again on March 23 in Oshkosh. Marquette's next home game will be Feb. 26 against Carthage.
