Apartment 26

There's little doubt that Apartment 26 secured a spot playing Ozzfest '99 solely because of frontman Terence "Biff" Butler's daddy — Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler.

That is to say, the sound it brings to its sophomore effort Music for the Massive — bashing drums, distorted guitar riffs and lots and lots of screaming — is a sound that has been heard plenty of times before.

A quick listen to Music for the Massive and there are visions of Linkin Park or any other alt-rock/metal/angry band currently being pushed by MTV.

Through disturbed whispers and fierce growls, Butler spits out violent threats ("Cut off the balls, gauge out the eyes/Turn down the sound and adjust the lighting") and desperate pleas ("You're the one that I adore/Get me through this stupid world") at a head-thrashing pace.

Apartment 26 does add a strange touch of electronica and swing here and there, even a hint of jazz in the opening track "Give Me More;" but, all signs of originality are quickly destroyed by the raging wails and crashing instruments that dominate the album.

In "New Year's Resolution" Butler shares his desire for 2004: "My resolution this year? I'll disappear completely."

One can only hope.
