Lady Eagles advance to second round of NCAA tourney

DURHAM, N.C. – Christina Quaye scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead ninth-seeded Marquette to a 67-64 victory over Old Dominion in the first round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday.

"It was just her afternoon," said Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell. "I think our team does a good job of knowing who to get the ball to and every timeout we just said, 'Go back to (Quaye), go back to Q.'"

The eight-seeded Lady Monarchs never found an answer for the freshman forward, and in the end it cost them.

With time winding down and the score knotted up, 64-64, senior forward Crystal Weaver emerged from a scramble along the sideline with the ball and found a wide open Quaye beneath the basket.

Quaye turned and sank a right-handed layup to give Marquette a two-point lead with 5.8 seconds to play.

"I'm just standing there jumping up and down and yelling, 'Hey I'm open!,'and Weaver actually saw me and passed it to me and I got up," Quaye said. "I wasn't expecting to get fouled at all."

But she was. Old Dominion's Paula Muxiri was whistled for an intentional foul on the play, sending Quaye to the line and giving Marquette (22-9) possession of the ball after her two free-throw attempts.

After Quaye made the first shot and missed the second, the Golden Eagles inbounded the ball underneath the Lady Monarchs' basket.

Three seconds later Old Dominion (25-7) got the ball back thanks to a jump-ball call, but a 3-point attempt by Marianthi Koukouvino at the buzzer was off the mark.

Guards Kelly Schwerman and Carolyn Kieger also keyed the Marquette victory.

Schwerman finished with 11 points and six assists while Kieger tallied 12 points and five assists. With the win, Marquette improved to 15-4 on the season when three Golden Eagles score in double figures.

The win also sets up a match-up against No. 1-ranked and No. 1-seeded Duke on the Blue Devils' home court Tuesday. Tip-off has not been announced and the game will be broadcast on either ESPN or ESPN2.
