Shockey’s antics shine light on double standard

As controversial as those things have been, I have found his antics more entertaining than anything.

Usually I would just dismiss this kind of comment, but after I thought about it, I saw that there was a clear double standard.

Shockey's behavior is not exactly unprecedented in the NFL, but usually players are ostracized for it rather than celebrated.

Players like Brian Cox and Terrell Owens have been lightning rods for controversy throughout their careers. Cox was notorious for flipping people off and sporting a terrible attitude. Meanwhile, Owens just tends to taunt a little too much. Owens in particular has been criticized more than Shockey for far less offensive offenses.

Last year when Owens scored a touchdown and pulled a Sharpie out of his sock, there were many people accusing him of turning the sport into a spectacle. And maybe that's just the problem. There are too many people in the business looking for black athletes to keep their mouths shut and just be athletes, while they are aiming to market white athletes whenever the opportunity arises. Obviously black athletes are marketed as well (Michael Jordan and LeBron James), but they can't step out of line without getting crucified for it.

Just ask Kobe Bryant and the companies who are killing his endorsement contracts. And when you are done with that, talk to Steve Madden and the other companies that are lining up to get Shockey on board.
