At the forefront of the album stand James Mercer's expressive vocals, which range from soft statements to wailing falsettos. His complex poetic lyrics add insightful depth, while "la-da-dums," "ba-ba-bas" and "whoos!" make the songs undoubtedly catchy.
"Saint Simon" soars and glides through varied layers, "Turn a Square" features driving guitar work and a pedal steel in "Gone For Good" gives the track a Southern rock feel.
As Chutes Too Narrow comes to a close, The Shins remind us yet again that it is possible for four boys from Albuquerque to create pop that is intricate, masterful and moving.
