Swinging Away: Three truths tell it like it is

Although he thinks he was shafted, he could have just finished off Mosley. The judges all scored the fight 115-113 for Mosley, each giving him the final four rounds of the fight. So maybe what De La Hoya should be doing is launching an investigation on why he refuses to stay aggressive in fights that he is winning. If De La Hoya was a football coach he would be getting 17-0 leads and kneeling on it from the end of the third quarter on, wondering what went wrong.

Second, the Big Ten is the most overrated conference in football. This weekend No. 15 Wisconsin lost to Nevada-Las Vegas, while Miami of Ohio trashed Northwestern. The combined score of those two “contests” was 67-19. And the Badgers didn’t even muster an offensive touchdown.

Perhaps even more embarrassing was Michigan State, which lost to the heralded Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 20-19. Even with a Heisman candidate at quarterback, Miami is a mid-major in every sense of the word. And Louisiana Tech is even worse, going 4-8 with a 3-5 conference record in the Western Athletic Conference last year.

Ohio State continued to show that it is nowhere near the team it was last year. After losing its best defensive and offensive players from last year’s team — safety Mike Doss and running back Maurice Clarret — the Buckeyes are looking rather vulnerable. Last week they beat San Diego State 16-13 thanks to a last-minute interception return. This time around they gave up a 17-point fourth quarter lead to let North Carolina State back into the game, only to pull out a hard-fought win in overtime.

Finally, with last week’s signing of Darko Milicic, the Detroit Pistons have assured themselves an NBA championship in the next two years. Last season Detroit made it to the Eastern Conference Finals without any regular season contributions from Zeljko Rebraca and Tayshaun Prince. This year Rebraca will be available the whole year and Prince will be a force to be reckoned with.

Playing alongside Ben Wallace, Milicic’s defense should not be an issue and he won’t have to get beat up by other big men for rebounds. The 7-footer can just pick up Big Ben’s scraps.

Just think about this lineup: Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Prince/Milicic/Mehmet Okur and Ben Wallace. And they will also have the strongest bench in the East. It includes Corliss Williamson, Elden Campbell, Bob Sura, Chucky Atkins, Lindsey Hunter, Rebraca and Argentinean rookie swingman Carlos Delfino.

And you can put that on the board.
