The Marquette Club Hockey Team finished their second season as a club sport on Feb. 18 with a 13-4 win over Northwestern. The team ended with a conference record of 4-11-1 and 6-16-2 overall.
"Overall the season was great," said club president Mike Westphal, a senior in the College of Health Sciences. "We wanted to be successful this year but we also wanted to develop the organization for the future."
Marquette played some tough competition throughout the season. The team had 10 games against 5 teams who ranked in the American Collegiate Hockey Association top 20. Highlights of the season included playing two games in front of sellout crowds at Missouri State and defeating eventual division runner-up Lindenwood University 9-3 at home, according to Westphal.
The team will lose its first and third leaders in points in seniors Westphal and Matt Goebel, but second leading scorer freshman Brian Schneekloth will return along with junior goalies Benny Affetto and Blake Hallada. The team will also lose junior Chris Simonds.
"With 10 freshmen on the team, we were the youngest team in the league. I think the young guys gained some valuable experience," said Westphal. "The future of Marquette University hockey is certainly bright."
Skiing and snowboarding ends season at regionals
The Club Skiing and Snowboarding team completed their season at the United States Collegiate Snowsports Association Regional meet in Marquette, Mich. on Feb. 18 and 19, according to team member Lexi Printon.
"We had a lot of new members this year," said Printon, a senior in College of Heath Sciences. "We also have a very young team. Our regional competitors were all in their first year racing."
The team had 3 members compete in the event: freshman Matt Doyle took 10th, freshman Alfredo Machado took 12th and junior John Jeziorski took 15th. Each of the competitors participated in the Snowboard Giant Slalom.
Women's volleyball team ranked second in country
The Marquette Women's Club Volleyball team is ranked No. 2 in the National Intramural Sports Association rankings after a strong February.
The team won the DePaul club volleyball tournament on Feb. 4 and took second in a tournament at Ohio State on Feb. 18. Their performances improved their overall season record to 24-2 in matches and 49-4 in games. Marquette does not play again until they host a tournament on March 25.
"We have an amazing group of girls who have worked hard to make our team great this year," said Sarah Frogge, a junior in the College of Nursing. "We are currently ranked no. 2 in the nation and we are looking forward to the challenge of our National tournament in April."
