The Marquette men's club volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (30-28, 30-17, 30-26) defeat March 1 against No. 1 Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
"We came out flat and were never able to regroup," said senior club president Thomas Liszka.
Marquette is currently ranked sixth in the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Top 25 poll and with the loss, fell to 17-5 this semester and 5-2 in conference play.
"Thankfully, we will see (UW-Oshkosh) again in the near future," said junior Marc Babyar.
The team plays Lakeland College (Wis.) tonight and can secure second place in the conference behind Oshkosh with a win, according to Liszka. The team will then host the Midwest 10 conference tournament on March 25.
Wrestlers eye first full season
The Marquette club wrestling team is looking forward to beginning its first official season when it begins practice on March 20.
"We're anxious to have a full season," said club president Brett Coffelt, a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences. "We're anxious to compete against NCAA teams."
The team had an abbreviated schedule first semester and had trouble organizing because the club was not approved by the Department of Recreational Sports until Jan. 20. Their numbers varied over their first four meets last semester, spanning from October to December. Their last competition was Feb. 4 in Dubuque, Iowa.
"Many of our wrestlers wrestled up a weight class for the entire season," said Coffelt. "We didn't have enough time to get down to our normal competitive weight classes."
Marquette has a young team with seven freshmen, three sophomores and one junior who competed in the team's first five meets. Coffelt led the team with seven victories in two different weight classes. Junior Adam Crozier was second with three wins.
The team will look to gain more competitors since many wrestlers trained with the team but did not compete.
"It's a chance for all of us to continue our careers in a full season," Cofelt said.
The team is a member of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association and will compete in the NCWA North Central Conference tournament and NCWA National Tournament this year.
Bowling team finishes strong
The bowling team finished its first season in a competition at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Feb. 28. The meet capped a successful first season, according to club vice president Wes Pedersen.
"We really didn't get started until mid-October," said Pedersen, a senior. "We managed to finish well, though."
The men's team finished seventh in the Wisconsin Collegiate Bowling Conference and the women's team finished 10th.
"We're looking forward to having a full team next season," Pederson said. "We want to start where we left off."
Pederson also said that the team is still looking members. Those interested in the club should contact Pederson or team member Ashley Baranowski.
