The 1974 national runner-up Marquette men's basketball team and seven individuals were inducted into the Marquette Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony held Saturday night.
Dan Fax (track and field), Ana Fernandez (women's tennis), Elisa Penalvo (women's tennis), William Kumprey (wrestling), Kelly Roethe-Hodges (women's soccer), Tony Smith (men's basketball) and Abbie Willenborg (women's basketball) made up this year's class.
The inductees and their family and friends met with former teammates and coaches during a reception at the Al McGuire Center on Friday.
Athletic director Bill Cords, who is in his 20th year at Marquette, expressed his thoughts on the state of the program.
"It took a long time," Cords said, "but everyone involved can take pride in what we've done so far."
Smith, who ranks fourth all-time in points (1,688) in men's basketball history, did not take too much pride in his accomplishments.
"I never thought I would have this opportunity," Smith said.
A similar response came from Roethe-Hodges — who was known as Kelly Roethe during her years at Marquette — the first women's soccer player to be inducted and the program's all-time leading scorer with 49 goals.
"There were many women that deserved this as much as I did," said Roethe-Hodges, now a pediatric resident at Yale University, of her teammates. "It's a huge honor."
Cords added: "Their efforts are greatly appreciated. We would not be here without their contributions."
