The Gus Knorr Show – 5/7/12

Hey everyone! The final episode of The Gus Knorr Show for this school year will begin momentarily. On tonight’s episode of The Gus Knorr Show, the theme will be songs relating to summer in some way, whether the word “summer” is in the song’s title, or if the song’s content relates to summer. However, the first two songs will be by The Beastie Boys, in memory of their recently deceased co-founder Adam “MCA” Yauch.

    • The first song tonight is from The Beastie Boys’ 1989 album Paul’s Boutique, widely considered their best album, and a landmark album in terms of sampling. Here’s “Hey Ladies.”
    • Next is the lead single from their most recent album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part 2, which was released just last year. That lead single is “Make Some Noise.”
    • Moving on to summer songs, the first one in this set is going the first of several songs played tonight with the word “summer” in the title. This song, one of the best known singles by The Lovin’ Spoonful, is “Summer in the City.”
    • Next up is another song from the 1960s, by Sly and the Family Stone, namely “Hot Fun in the Summertime.”
    • The next song is by yet another band that formed in the 1960s, who have written countless songs about the season. Of course, I’m talking about The Beach Boys, and this is just one of their summer-related songs, “All Summer Long.”
    • Moving to a song from a different decade, the 1970s, the next one is arguably the best known one by British band Mungo Jerry, “In the Summertime.”
    • The next song was originally released in 1958, but has been covered many times over the years. However, it was first recorded by Eddie Cochran, two years before his death in a car crash at the age of 21. This is probably Cochran’s best known song, “Summertime Blues.”
    • One of the best known covers of “Summertime Blues” was released by The Who on their pioneering 1970 live album Live at Leeds. It also, coincidentally, happens to be the next song on The Gus Knorr Show!
    • Next is an instrumental from the 1970s, which was partially sampled in a hit rap song from 1991, which was also about summer. However, the original version of the song was performed by Kool & the Gang, and is simply called “Summer Madness.”
    • The song which sampled “Summer Madness” was released by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) in 1991. Fittingly enough, it’s about summer, is called “Summertime,” and is also the next song played on The Gus Knorr Show.
    • The next two songs were both released in 1984, and the first one of these was by former Eagles frontman Don Henley. Obviously, I’m talking about “The Boys of Summer.”
    • The second of these two songs was by Bryan Adams, and is titled “Summer of ’69.”
    • The Wesley Willis Song of the Week is next, and is about one of his trips he took to San Diego on Northwest Airlines.  Appropriately enough, it’s called “Northwest Airlines.” (The next few songs will all have some association with California, are all from the state, and the songs are mainly of the surf-rock genre.)
    • The first of these songs is by…wait for it…The Beach Boys, as one of their first major singles from 1963, “Surfin’ USA.”
    • The next song was written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, but performed by Jan & Dean, and is one of their best known songs, “Surf City.”
    • The final of these three surf rock songs, an instrumental, is by another band from California, The Surfaris, and is simply known by two words uttered at the beginning of the song: “Wipe Out.”
    • Moving on to several love songs with a summer backdrop or otherwise summer-related metaphors or allusions, the first of these is by late-’60s rock group The Rascals, simply titled “Groovin’.”
    • Next up is a song using one of these metaphors, by Motown group Martha and the Vandellas, titled “(Love is Like a) Heat Wave.”
    • The second to last song on The Gus Knorr Show this year will be yet another love song with a summer backdrop, “Under the Boardwalk,” by The Drifters.
    • Fittingly enough, the final song played on The Gus Knorr Show this year will be a classic by Alice Cooper, “School’s Out.”

That’s it for The Gus Knorr Show tonight and this school year, but stay tuned for The Gus Knorr Show next fall, at a later to be determined time and date, which will likely be revealed sometime in September. In the meantime, thanks for everyone who has listened to The Gus Knorr Show in any capacity or amount this year, good luck on finals if you’re a student, and have a great summer!
