Elena Ivanova, a visiting assistant professor of chemistry, passed away unexpectedly Sunday due to undisclosed reasons.

Ivanova’s students were notified last night in an email from Scott Reid, professor and chair of the chemistry department.

“It is with regret and deep sadness that I inform you of the death of Dr. Elena Ivanova earlier today,” Reid said in the email.

Ivanova’s classes have been canceled this week and no decision has been made on who will take over the classes for the remainder of the semester.

“Dr. Ivanova had taught first and second-year chemistry in the department since 2010, and was a great educator but an even better person, who was loved and admired by all who knew her, especially her students,” Reid said in the email. “Dr. Ivanova’s passion for teaching and care and concern for her students met the highest ideals of a Marquette education. At this time our thoughts and prayers go out to her husband, Qadir Timerghazin, assistant professor of chemistry, and family.”

Students took to social media to share their respects and memories about Ivanova. There is also a candlelight vigil planned for Monday night at 9 p.m. in front of Todd Wehr Chemistry Building.

“Elena was a great educator but even better person and will be sorely missed,” said Richard Holz, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, in a Monday email to his college’s students and faculty. “I want to echo Scott’s sentiments and remind everyone that we have many resources on campus to help anyone who needs to talk with someone, including staff from the Counseling Center, Campus Ministry, Faber Center, Office of Residence Life and Division of Student Affairs.”
