Super Bowl Sunday is an undeclared national holiday. People count down the days until they can break out their favorite team’s gear, meet up with friends and watch the most anticipated football game of the year.
Now it’s finally that time of year; two teams remain in the NFL Playoffs to battle for ultimate bragging rights in Tampa on February 1. And those teams are…the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals?
OK, so it isn’t the big name match-up we got last year with the New England Patriots and New York Giants or the storyline that went with it as the Patriots tried for the perfect season. It doesn’t have the two “best” regular season teams that all the experts expected to reach the Super Bowl (the Giants and Tennessee Titans let us down). There isn’t a team from a major market to draw viewers in either.
So will anyone watch the game?
Why not? Just because this season’s match-up isn’t as intriguing as in years past doesn’t mean that it still won’t be a great game with good storylines. Take these, for instance:
1. Kurt Warner goes from hero to zero, and now back to hero. Ten years ago, Warner led the St. Louis Rams to a victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. After that, Warner’s career hit the rocks. He lost his starting quarterback role with the Rams in 2002, was released in 2004 from the team and struggled to find playing time after that. It wasn’t until 2007 when Warner replaced the injured Matt Leinart of the Arizona Cardinals that he regained a full time starting position. Since then, Warner has shown that he still has what it takes to be an elite quarterback in the NFL, but a Super Bowl victory would silence all of his critics.
2. The Arizona Cardinals not only reach the playoffs, but make it to the Super Bowl. Not since 1998 have the Cardinals made it to the playoffs, and that season also featured the team’s last playoff victory and winning season until this one. Before this season, the Cardinals, last trip to a championship game came in 1947, when they won the NFL Championship as the Chicago Cardinals. Yes, this was before there was a Super Bowl. The Cardinals seem to be the laughable losers of the NFL since then, and are trying to shake that persona and gain national respect.
3. The Pittsburgh Steelers try to get some attention. The Steelers have quietly been a team to reckon with in the AFC. In the nine seasons since 2000, the Steelers have had only one season with a losing record, six playoff appearances and victory in Super Bowl XL over the Seattle Seahawks. However, in the time the Steelers have done this, they have been overshadowed by various AFC headlines, including: the Patriots dynasty, the talent of the Peyton Manning and the addition of Brett Favre to the New York Jets. The Steelers are looking to show that they deserve just as much attention.
Now if these stories still don’t seem to quite grab someone’s interest, tune into the Super Bowl just to watch the commercials. Everyone knows that they are arguably the best part, and this year should be no different. One anticipated commercial is the Miller High Life ad that is only supposed to be one second long. So if the game just isn’t your thing, tune in and watch the advertisement. Be careful though, if you blink you might miss it.
