Summer. A time when stress and worry aren’t in your vocabulary… until the girl next to you is sporting the same floral two-piece skirt set.
Music festivals are hands down my favorite thing to dress up for, but I’ve realized that originality and standing out is becoming more difficult. Festivals are attracting more people in recent years and stores are noticing. A lot of big stores have released look books and festival-inspired lines and this is somewhat causing a problem. The week before a festival, my local shopping area was swamped with girls dizzy with excitement… and they bought all the flower crowns. And it got me thinking; do I really want to wear something everyone else is going to have?
Standing out when you actually like what everyone else is wearing can be challenging but grabbing inspiration from different areas and thinking outside the box can help. I think having one key twist to an outfit can make you stand out substantially. Instead of a flower crown, get creative with head wraps. Try a chain or jewel head wrap or even use your own favorite vintage scarf. If there’s a dress you’ve fallen for, pair it up with some unique platforms or vintage sandals. Making small adjustments change it up just enough.
Goodwill, Salvation Army, and local thrift shops hold lots of hidden gems. Vintage will save you money and set your outfit apart. I find going to major stores like Urban Outfitters, NastyGal, and Threadscence before thrifting helps me gather outfit ideas and makes it easier to combine new and old pieces. You can even mix different styles together. Maybe you can mix an urban style necklace (like a gold chain) with a boho inspired maxi dress. Don’t be afraid to mix it up, most people will be there to have a good time and enjoy the atmosphere!
