The Ting Tings are starting us out this week with their song That’s Not My Name. Do you know what a ting ting is? I definitely don’t. And as long as we’re talking band names we don’t get, what’s a Goo Goo Doll? That doesn’t matter, I guess, because The Goo Goo Dolls‘ song Sympathy is great. Gimme Sympathy by Metric is one of only a few other songs out there that uses the word sympathy in the title. In the song, we’re asked “who would you rather be / The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?” and Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles is mentioned regularly. When it comes to sun, there’s no song that seems sunnier than Brighter Than the Sun by Colbie Caillat. Callait was featured on the soundtrack to Morning Glory (starring Rachel McAdams and Harrison Ford), just like Natasha Bedingfield with her song Strip Me. Strip Me is really a song about empowerment and the song we’re following it up with is also a song about empowering others. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis create a beautiful and chilling look at American society with their song Same Love (Feat. Mary Lambert).

“A certificate on paper isn’t going to solve it all, but it’s a damn good place to start.”

Macklemore makes a strong point about people not choosing who they are and we can see some of that point in Katy Perry’s song Part of Me. Perry has been a performer on Saturday Night Live, both as a musical guest and as a host. One of the more recent musical guests on SNL was the band The Lumineers. Along with their popular song Ho Hey, they performed Stubborn Love. Stubborn love is a great description of a type of love, just like Skinny Love (when two people love each other but are too shy to admit it) is a great description of a love. The Birdy cover of the Bon Iver song is one of my favorites. As far as other great covers go, the Letters to Cleo cover of I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick was a great addition to the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. The movie came out in 1999, as did the song we’re playing next: She’s So High by Tal Bachman. The song implies that the woman he’s singing about it too good for him and a more enlightened being. Another song about enlightened beings is Bodhisattva by Steely Dan.

    Bonus Song:
Jungle Love by The Steve Miller Band
