The Marquette women’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker in extra time to the No. 12 DePaul Blue Demons on Senior Night.

The Golden Eagles had a pre-match ceremony to honor the nine seniors on the team. Seniors Sofie Schunk – playing out of the net – Mady Vicker, Shalese Miller, Alex Heffron, Haley Fritzlen, Mary Luba, Maggie Edlebeck, Elizabeth Bollinger and Isabela all got the start for Marquette, along with juniors Amanda Engel and Jacie Jermier.

With the senior heavy starting lineup, the Golden Eagles were able to give some players more playing time than they’ve seen all year. But even with the lack of playing time, Marquette was able to keep pace with the Blue Demons. But as it got deeper and deeper into the half, coach Markus Roeders started subbing in his starters.

Even with the starters, DePaul controlled play. The Golden Eagles made costly turnovers and mistakes, and the Blue Demons took advantage of it. In the 32nd minute, Amber Paul caught a cross from Alexa Ben and put home a rebound past Engel to give DePaul a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Jermier took down a Blue Demon attacker in the box, and on the penalty kick, Elise Wyatt put the shot mid-hight on the left side, past the diving Engel, to increase Depaul’s lead to two.

The Golden Eagles got its best scoring chances of the half with a minute left, when sophomores Liz Bartels and Darian Powell did great passing plays with Luba, but DePaul keeper Alejandria Godinez stopped the shots.

Marquette came out in the second half and started to control play. The Golden Eagles were able to maintain possession and were able to create offense by stretching out the field and swing the ball from one side of the pitch to another. In the 60th minute, the Golden Eagles finally got on the board.

Powell caught a cross from freshman Heather Handwork and capitalized on the DePaul defender’s inability to clear the ball, and cut the Blue Demon deficit to one.

Marquette nearly netted another goal in the 75th minute, when the Golden Eagles got four consecutive corner kicks. Each corner kick got into the box and Marquette had a quality chance, but couldn’t put one in the back of the net. It was the last chance the Golden Eagles had until the 86th minute.

In the 86th minute, DePaul committed a foul just inches from inside the box. Luba took the free kick, and booted it into the bottom right corner of the net. Luba’s fifth goal of the season tied the game at two and sent the game into extra time.

In the first overtime period, the Golden Eagles continued to control possession and pressure the DePaul back line, but after the first 10 minutes, the score was still tied. In the second half of extra time, the Blue Demons capitalized on one last Marquette mistake.

The Blue Demons got a corner kick after the Golden Eagles cleared a cross out the back. On the corner, Ben chipped the cross over Engel on the right side of the net to give the Blue Demons a 3-2 victory, staying undefeated on the season.

Marquette will go on the road to close out the Big East season. Next up for the Golden Eagles is Saturday against Providence. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
