Cross country teams compete at Griak Invite

Marquette’s women’s cross country team finished 25th out of 35 teams and the men’s team took 28th out of 31 teams at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn. Both finishes were slightly disappointing for both teams.

The women’s team had four underclassmen in their top seven, and finished with a total of 665 points. Junior Kellie Greenwood led the women’s team for the third time in as many meets this year, finishing 68th overall in the 6K race with a time of 22:40.

Fellow junior Kayla Spencer was second (132nd overall) with a time of 23:40, a mere second ahead of freshman of freshman Meghan Carroll (135th). Senior Elisia Meyle (154th) finished in just less than 24 minutes, and freshman Jessica Parker (176th) rounded out the top five with a time of 24:16. Sophomores Mariah Frank (24:19) and Allison Parker (24:47) finished sixth and seventh on the team, respectively.

The men’s top seven featured only juniors and freshmen, as the team finished with 730 total points. Redshirt junior captain Blake Lawson was first on the team and 133rd overall in the 8K race with a time of 27:02. Junior William Hennessy wasn’t far behind in 137th place and finished in just more than 27 minutes. Freshman Alec Miller battled back issues, but managed to finish third on the team (141st overall) at 27:07. He was followed by redshirt junior David Sajdak (156th) at 27:21. Three freshmen rounded out the top seven, with Jack Carpenter (163rd) running a time of 27:31, Aric Miller finishing at 27:46, and Nick Brey finishing in just less than 28 minutes.

The Golden Eagles next meet is Friday, Oct. 17, at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill.
