Marquette Gyros not going anywhere

Marquette Gyros ownership wants students to know the restaurant isn’t going anywhere soon, despite being part of the deal that saw Marquette buy Angelo’s Pizza Restaurant & Bar.

Dena Dallis, whose family owns Marquette Gyros and works as a cashier, said while Marquette now owns the property, the business, which opened in 1988, is still up and running for the foreseeable future.

“We had a lot of panicked customers when the news broke,” Dallis said. “We just want people to know that Marquette Gyros is not closing.”

Dallis said her family was notified of the sale about a month ago, when Angelo’s owner Mike Albano informed them of his desire to sell.

But, while the sale came as a surprise, Dallis said they were even more surprised when Albano later informed them Angelo’s was closing down.

“That was definitely a big shock,” Dallis said. “I’ve known him since I was a kid, and it was really surreal when he said Angelo’s was closing for good.”

After the sale went through, Dallis said Marquette approached Gyros about continuing to lease the property.

“They reached out to us and said they wanted to see us stay here,” Dallis said. “We lease from them now, and we don’t see anything changing soon.”

Dallis did express some concern that business might decline.

“Angelo’s had a lot of people on the weekends,” Dallis said. “We’ll miss some of those people, but ultimately I don’t see a big drop-off.”

As for the future of Marquette Gyros, Dallis said it’s still too early to tell.

“We’ll be around for the next few years,” Dallis said. “When it comes time to make a decision on a new lease, Marquette and us will figure it out.”
