Maymon to leave men’s basketball team

The Marquette men’s basketball team suffered yet another blow when freshman forward Jerrone Maymon decided to leave the program suddenly. Coach Buzz Williams made the announcement Monday evening.

“We want to thank Jeronne for his contributions to the program while he was here and wish him the best of luck in the future,” Williams said in Marquette Athletics press release.

Maymon is the third player to be lost for the Golden Eagles this season. Freshman Junior Cadougan and sophomore Christ Otule are also missing this year’s action with season-ending injuries.  Maymon, who is 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds, was expected to play heavy minutes when the 6-foot-10 Otule went down for the season.

Maymon, the Madison native, came to Marquette after a prolific high school career. He was named Wisconsin player of the year in both his junior and senior seasons at Madison Memorial High School.

He saw action in nine games coming off the bench for Marquette this season. He averaged 4.0 points and 4.2 rebounds and shot 48.1 percent from the field.

Maymon’s departure will lead to the question if Vander Blue, Marquette’s star recruit for 2010-’11, will be affected by the decision. Blue was a high school teammate of Maymon’s and admitted his presence at Marquette played a factor in his eventual decision to commit under Williams.

Granted it may have not taken a vast amount of coaching because of the talent level, but Buzz took the team to the tourney last year, could still have a decent year this year with 8 newcomers and you want to give him one more year, and that’s it?

And Eric, you clearly don’t know much about the level of practiced required for Marquette to compete. While there is solid talent on our team, it is still sparse compared to some programs and requires extra work to close the gap

Most importantly, Maymon didn’t look like he had what it was gonna take. I didn’t see one flash of brilliance that indicated he might turn into a solid starter for this team.

Just what the hell kind of a program is Buzz running? Everyone knew this year was supposed to be a rebuilding year – but that doesn’t really excuse losing games with a 17 point lead over FSU, or late second half double digit lead over North Carolina State. Now we’re having problems keeping players? Just what is he doing in practices. First Junior ruptures his achilles tendon, and then Otule goes out with a broken foot. People outside the medical community may not realize but it is damn near impossible to rupture an achilles tendon – it was either a freak incident or he was way overworked. Practices that cause severe injuries to two starters isn’t good enough, now he has to start running players off completely? Especially one like Maymon which might also cost us Blue! All I know is Buzz better get some serious talent, because one rebuilding year is expected but if he doesn’t actually rebuild with talent then he’s going to ruin the program. I say we give him one more year to try to put something together and if he doesnt we give him the boot.
