Marquette Journal wins Best Student Magazine, among other awards

Yesterday morning, the Society of Professional Journalists announced the 2008 Mark of Excellence Awards Regional winners. The Marquette Journal is pleased to announce we have been named the Best Student Magazine in Region 6, which includes the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota.

Journal photographer Kevin Kozicki, a senior in the College of Communication, also won first place for Photo Illustration for his feature photography in the Fall 2008 feature, “Let it all slang out.”

The Journal swept the Photo Illustration category, taking second place with the Dec. 04, 2008 issue cover “The Hands That Made Milwaukee,” by Editor-in-Chief senior Greg Shutters and junior photographer Jaclyn Poeschl. Third place went to sophomore Brooke McEwen’s photos for the “Mind the Gap” feature from the Oct. 23, 2008 issue.

In the Non-Fiction Magazine Article category, the Journal took second and third place with Shutters’ “Milwaukee’s Best” and junior Caitlin Kavanaugh’s “Facets of Faith” feature stories, respectively.

Congratulations to the Marquette Journal staff — we are extremely proud of our accomplishments this year.

The awards will be formally presented during the Mark of Excellence Luncheon at the Region 6 Spring Conference in Bloomington, Minn. on March 27 to 28. The aforementioned first place winners will move on to the national competition.
